Mary approached Speechcamp 3 months ago. Her company had given her a promotion. She was the new Head of Marketing. This meant having more responsibility and more income. To her horror it also meant she would have to deliver weekly presentations to her department. You see, Mary had a severe anxiety of speaking in front of audiences.
“My voice keeps shaking”, she said frantically over the phone, “I just want to run away.”
I paused for a moment before replying, “The first thing I want you to let go of, is judging how good or bad you are.”
Many people believe that they are scared of public speaking. But the truth is they are scared of their own power. I heard so many excuses why people chose to put their lives on hold. Avoidance is the sister of fear. We need much more energy to maintain our comfort zone than to make a step into the unknown.
If you want to become a good speaker you need to experience VULNERABILITY. This is a scary place because you need to give up many negative self-images and show your true self. You may not like it at the beginning. It is painful and can be disappointing. But only for a little while.
If you don`t run away you will start to feel the divine power within. When your false ego falls silent you have so much to give and so much to say. Your voice is no longer just a combination of a variety of sounds. Your voice becomes a powerful instrument that takes people beyond their limitations. Your voice becomes a healing energy that flows from heart to heart.
During my phone call with Mary I invited her to try our 8-week Master Speakers Course. I asked her to use every meeting as a therapy. Mary agreed.
Vulnerability is an important holistic aspect of public speaking. As soon as you cross the ocean of your emotions you will realise that there is nothing to be scared of. You will find a new you – the one who has been waiting to speak for a long time. And public speaking will become an enjoyable process. Because you are not looking to try to be good. What you are looking for is to be truthful and helpful.
When Mary arrived at our course she agreed to go through her own vulnerability and she relaxed. She started to talk freely and one day her beautiful personality came out of its cage. Mary delivered a powerful speech about how to express your business brand. She surprised us. She surprised herself.
“How do you feel”, I asked Mary when she was shaking my hand.
“I feel like a heavy stone had been removed from my chest”, she said.
So…are you ready to move aside the stone of fear? Are you ready to add your voice to the symphony of life? Sharing this journey with many people I am so happy to hear again and again:
“My life has just begun!”
